Dexamethasone is a glucocorticoid. It has anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, antishock, immunosuppressive action.
Dexamethasone interacts with specific cytoplasmic receptors and forms a complex that penetrates the cell nucleus, induces depression or expression of mRNA on ribosomes changing the formation of proteins, including lipocortin mediating cellular effects.

Dexamethasone causes the involution of lymphoid tissue  and lymphopenia, which causes immunosuppression.
Antiallergic action of Dexamethasone is a consequence of inhibition of synthesis and secretion of mediators of allergy and reducing the number of basophils. Dexamethasone restores adrenoceptor sensitivity to catecholamines. Dexamethasone accelerates the catabolism of proteins and reduces their content in the plasma, decreases glucose utilization by peripheral tissues and gluconeogenesis in the liver increases. Dexamethasone stimulates the formation of enzyme protein in the liver, surfactant, fibrinogen, erythropoietin, lipomodulin.
Dexamethasone causes a redistribution of body fat (increases lipolysis of adipose tissue of limbs and the deposition of fat in the upper half of the body and face). Dexamethasone  favors the formation of higher fatty acids and triglycerides. Decadron reduces absorption and increases excretion of calcium; delay sodium and water secretion of ACTH. Dexamethasone has anti-shock action.
